Hi everyone!
Thank you for all the letters and everything! So Tuesday we went to Bani to pick up Hermana R's new companion. We thought she would be there around 9am so we went super early but she didn't get there until 2! But it was fun because on transfer day in the campo everyone just goes to one chapel in their zone. There were soo many Americans and I just got to talk in English for like 6 hours. On Wednesday we worked only with menos activos and new converts. That's the majority of what we do because we just found out there are 600 menos activos who are technically in our branch- 600! I seriously still can't believe it. We have so much work to do. We got a bitida from a menos activo. I seriously pray for bitidas all day because they are soo good. I met my six year old twin. She actually looks more like me than I thought she would. kind of eerie. We had a nice chat in English. She is here for 3 months and cannot speak any Spanish. poor kid. Oh wait, welcome to my life! Just kidding, my Spanish is getting a lot better.
We met with L and family. We are supposed to be going to them less which makes us sad because we love them so much. On Thursday I scored big time at the Haitian paca. I got 2 skirts and 2 dresses all for 80 pesos which is like 2 dollars. It rained so hard later and I forgot my umbrella. I was totally soaking and it was freezing cold and I had to go home and change and get a sweater. The weather is so bi polar here. When we went to change it was probably 6 and the other hermanas were still in the house.... we totally caught them laughing and having a good time. Poor R, I know it kills her to have to stay inside. And this is her second trainer who is dying (going home) at the end of the transfer. We had a lesson with E. We talked to her about a conference talk by President Uchdorf about having hope. I think it makes her nervous to talk to with us because it makes her feel accountable. But she is doing a lot better and has come to church for the last month, yay! Friday started off at 3 am with a phone call from the other hermanas. In the next room. We were super confused but we went into their room. R was hysterical. shaking and hyperventilating. She said she felt a bad spirit and she heard the table and the dining room moving really fast back and forth on the tile for about 5 minutes. This is probably the third time she has experienced something like this. I don't really know what happened or what to think but it was super scary.
We had district meeting and now there are TWO american elders. We always go to lunch after the meeting and we get to speak English the whole time. It's great! At lunch, though, the topic was all the awkward things I have done. And there was a long list. Super embarrassing but still pretty funny. Then we had a bunch more menos activo lessons. So one of the elders in our district is obsessed with titanic. One day we were meeting with a menos activo who is 14 and we saw this super great titanic clock on her wall. It's seriously so classic and she probably bought it from a thrift store. Long story short, Hermana D asked her for it. So we got another clock from a store and traded her. We are going to give it to the elder for his birthday. We are so excited but it is still a month away. We met with D FINALLY. I swear she is hiding from us. The thing is with her is she knows it's true but she is just scared. Then we went to dinner at the branch president's house.... Hermana's D and R and I had planned this dinner and fhe last week. Hermana Rodriguez, the Mission President's wife, told us we could eat at members de confianza (people they are confidant about their food being safe), so we figured it would be fine. But when we got there, M, the branch president's wife, was super excited and said she was going to make us spaghetti. The new hermana, hermana L, snapped back at her, "well only if you make it to go because we are not eating here." We explained to her (L) the rule and she got super mad and whipped out the cell phone and called president Rodriguez. I have only been here one transfer but I know you don't call president for spaghetti. She was super rude about it and M was super offended and president too. It ended really badly and Hermana D and I stayed after they had left to apologize. But now everyone in the rama (branch) knows and will barely talk to her... great. But other than that she is really nice and we all get along. I am sure she had good intentions, she just went about it the wrong way. Saturday we met with A, a menos activo. She is 13 so we have to be really careful. we didn't even know she had been reading the book of Mormon because most people here don't. But it turns out she is in the middle of second nephi!! She started talking about her favorite stories and what she had learned and we were just sitting there shocked. yay! We are so excited to keep teaching her and watching her learn.
Sunday we had almost 100 people at church, which is a ton. A lot of our menos activos showed up and 5 investigatos came and we were really excited. Even the elders, who don't even go to our branch, called to tell us good job because that was almost double of what we usually have. It has been really great to see our little branch grow! We started teaching two new families too so we are realllly excited about that. Families are the best! We got to watch the broadcast on Sunday. It was good but we were a little disappointed. We had all thought there would be some big news and had been speculating on it all week. But it was still good. At church our new little member, J, who is nine paid his tithing! It was seriously the cutest thing ever. He only had ten pesos so he paid his one peso tithing and he was soo proud. It was super cute.
So today we played bitilla and frisbee with our district and we bought a liquidora (Blender)so we can make our own bitidas, yay! So this week I was reading the book of Mormon and I was thinking about Sam. Sam was really righteous. He did all the right things. He was with Nephi through all the hard times and he stayed faithful. In chapter 2 it talks about him and how he believed everything his father and Nephi said. We don't really hear a lot about Sam though. He kind of goes unrecognized. Most of us, though are like Sam. Most people wont be prophets like Nephi. We won't be stake presidents or general authorities. But we won't be Laman and Lemuel either. Sam is kind of just like the good member of the church. We talked about this a lot within our district. It's okay to not be the ap or the zone leader. Most of the best work is the Sam work, being good faithful members. We can make a big difference in the church by just being good members and by being good examples to those who aren't members. Anyway, I love you all and hope you have a great week! Hermana Rush
